Rule About Us
"Ship the Wine. Do Some Time."
"Chardonnay Carpetbaggers"
"Bootleggers"

This is the rhetoric of the Wine & Spirit Wholesalers of America (www.wswa.org).

This well-funded, national lobby and its counterparts at the state level engage in a national wine war that pits consumers -- who want the option of having wineries and retailers ship directly to them -- against wine wholesalers, who are threatening winemakers and citizens with jail time if they bypass the middlemen.

Free the Grapes! is a national grassroots coalition of wine lovers,  wineries and retailers. Our goal is to allow wine consumers to purchase the wines they want, in the manner of their choosing.

Free the Grapes! was established in June 1998 by five wine industry associations to augment, not replace, the three-tier system with limited, regulated direct-to-consumer shipments. The association represents well over 2,000 U.S. wineries, and focuses its collective resources on seeking a workable solution that efficiently serves the needs of adult wine lovers and state regulators in a dynamic marketplace. A 501c(6) non-profit California trade association, Free the Grapes' operations are funded exclusively by contributions from wine consumers and winemakers.

The following six organizations support Free the Grapes!:

Coalition for Free Trade
The Coalition for Free Trade is coordinated winery and consumer plaintiffs with numerous lawsuits that challenged outright bans on interstate wine direct shipments. The case was heard before the U.S. Supreme Court in December 2004, and a favorable ruling was issued May 16, 2005.

Family Winemakers of California
Family Winemakers of California represents over 700 California wineries in Sacramento, with a focus on public policy that affects wine production and compliance issues.

Napa Valley Vintners Association
The Napa Valley Vintners lead in the promotion and protection of the Napa Valley Appellation as one of the finest winegrowing regions in the world. The association of more than 200 wineries has provided steady support and impetus in the direct shipping campaign.

WineAmerica
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., WineAmerica represents over 500 wineries in 48 states, and provides a national perspective and approach to solving the direct shipping issue, just one of many initiatives it conducts to enhance the business environment of American wine-growing.

Wine Institute
Wine Institute is the public policy advocacy association of California wineries. Wine Institute brings together the resources of 887 wineries and affiliated businesses to support legislative and regulatory advocacy, international market development, media relations, scientific research, and education programs that benefit the entire California wine industry. Wine Institute has been at the forefront of direct shipping legislation for nearly 20 years, and actively lobbies in all 50 states. The association’s mission is to initiate and advocate state, federal and international public policy to enhance the environment for the responsible consumption and enjoyment of wine.
